What Makes a Good Remodeler?

What makes a good remodeler?

I could drag on endlessly about our team, our process, our dedication to trusted and quality relationships, materials, schedules…and so much more. In reality, it is a whole lot simpler in concept than that, but it does take intention to figure out.

A good remodeler is no different than a good dentist, mechanic, financial advisor, attorney…or any other service provider.

Being “good” at something requires a defined skillset, a mastery of a craft with continued commitment to growth and development. But mastery in a very personal, high-stakes, service-oriented area also requires the advisor to be deeply connected and personally committed to what most concerns their client base.

What are they asking most about? What are their top worries? What would we desire if we were in their position? What might we be able to offer that they may not know about our area of expertise?

Sometimes, you may just need a quick repair or a small fix that doesn’t require a whole lot of people skills. The transaction comes and goes by the time you give much worry to how the person interacted with you…

But remodeling isn’t that. It’s a big undertaking that will likely cause a bit of short-term discomfort for long-term gain. We have been doing this in Ankeny and across the Des Moines metro since 2022, and this is the part homeowners underestimate most.

Knowing who is partnering with you personally in this endeavor is arguably of the highest importance. That’s why at Elk River, you’re going to:

  • Have a personal connection with our owner;
  • Be introduced to each member of our team and told exactly what their role will be, including how and when their support will become most important. Emma, our in-house designer, is the one who works directly with you on finishes, fixtures, and layouts, so you are not left with a 200-item selection sheet and no idea where to start;
  • Learn what the process is going to take, including a detailed, low-surprise estimate and an outline of the plan long before a hammer swings;
  • Be able to ask questions directly at any point in the process;
  • Sleep well assured that experienced professionals are looking out for you and your home at every step.
Skill and personal connection are both essential.

It’s not about diminishing the competition, but the reality that we know all too well is that this is not the experience you will get from just anywhere. There are many great contractors out there. We want you to have the skills to be able to spot the difference.

Here's what that looks like at Elk River:

That’s why we are so passionate about curating our client experience and talking openly about it.

Take the time to sit down with the people and organization that will be partnering with you to massively transform your space, for the better. It will be worth it.

If you want that conversation to be with us, here is exactly what it looks like. Fill out our contact form and we will get back to you within one business day. We will ask for photos of your current space and any inspiration you have gathered, then set up a phone consultation to talk through your goals and figure out whether we are a good fit. If we are, we come out for an on-site walkthrough, and the estimate comes after that. No hammer swings until you have seen the whole plan.
